Lucas: I will keep this £10m signing out of the Liverpool team

Lucas Leiva says that he has been impressed by Emre Can since he joined Liverpool, but insists that he will keep him out of the team.

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva says that Emre Can has impressed him during his time at the club so far.

The energetic central midfielder joined up from Bayer Leverkusen in a £10 million move earlier this summer, and Lucas has already moved to comment on the impact he has made.

However, the Brazilian says that he will ensure that Can does not take his place in Brendan Rodgers’s starting line-up.

"He is a young, dynamic wheel in our team that will help us a lot,” Lucas said. "He, like me, can act both as the first man, and as the second. I will be committed to winning this race against Emre Can healthily."

Can has not played a competitive senior game for Liverpool yet and still awaits his debut, but he has clearly done enough to impress on the training pitch during his brief spell at the club so far.

The German youth international was an unused substitute in the Reds' first game of the season, with Lucas seemingly coming out on top in the early contest between the two.

The more experienced Liverpool man was selected to play in central midfield, leaving Can to watch on as his teammates battled to a 2-1 victory over Southampton.

It was by no means as comfortable as Liverpool would have been expecting, but it was a win that got their season off to a winning start and they will be hoping to push on now.

Can was brought in as part of a host of additions this summer, as Liverpool look to consolidate their position in the top four of the Premier League this term.

The club made it back to Champions League football last season and have moved quickly to ensure that they have enough depth in their squad to compete domestically and in Europe.

It means that Can’s chances may come as the season progresses, but at the age of 20 he still has plenty of time to develop – even if he has to play a rotational role this campaign – and the signs are that he will be an excellent purchase at Anfield when he does make his first-team bow.
