Both teams got their domestic campaign off to a winning start thanks to City's 2-0 triumph over Newcastle United and Liverpool's 2-1 edging of Southampton.
While Brendan Rodgers may have bought well in the summer window, with Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel "looking like a decent central pairing", Barton cannot foresee a result for Liverpool but, rather, a closely-contested but ultimately fruitful victory for City, who have the added advantage of playing at the Etihad Stadium.
"They have strength in depth in every area of the field, and in Sergio Aguero and David Silva they have players capable of breaking open the tightest of defences.
"Lovren and Skrtel look a decent central pairing for Liverpool, but they’ve only played one game together so far so it’ll be interesting to see how they deal with City."
Concluding, Barton said: "I think it’ll be tight, but I really fancy City to edge it by the odd goal."
