Mario Balotelli is no stranger to being at the centre of debate.
Still just 24-years-old, the mercurial striker has consistently walked a fine line between the sublime and the ridiculous over the course of his young career.
The Italian has already worn the colours of three European giants through the first eight years of his professional experience, making headlines both on and off the pitch everywhere he’s gone.
Now, he’s poised to add a fourth massive club to his CV. Negotiations with Liverpool have taken off and a €20 million deal is set to see him swap Milan for Merseyside.
And another Italian striker who courted plenty of controversy in his day, the legendary Christian Vieri, believes Milan have done brilliantly to cash in on the ex-Inter man.
Oggi Galliani ha fatto il più grande COLPO della storia del MILAN— ChristianVieri (@vieri_bobo) August 21, 2014
Vieri - who, like Balotelli, played for both Milanese outfits - sent out a tweet that translates to: ‘Today Galliani has made the greatest masterstroke in the history of Milan.’
The message is a likely reference to Rossoneri transfer guru Adriano Galliani convincing Liverpool to splash out €20 million to bring Balotelli to Anfield.
From both a Milan or Liverpool perspective there certainly isn’t an overwhelmingly positive or negative take on the impending move.
The Italian side are looking at taking a loss on their reported €22 million investment in Balotelii in January 2013, not to mention will part ways with with one of their best players.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will see a contentious and inconsistent character enter the dressing room, but one that has undeniable ability and Premier League experience to boot.
Of course, the deal in the end could suit both parties nicely - there’s no mutual exclusivity.
Vieri’s take is clearly that Milan are better off moving on from the Balotelli era. Whether that opinion is vindicated remains to be seen, whilst Liverpool appear convinced they can get the best out of one of the game’s most fiercely debated talents.
