Real Madrid will be looking to take a huge step towards winning their second trophy before the start of the 2014-15 La Liga season when they host Atletico Madrid tonight.
It is the first leg of the 2014 Supercopa de Espana – the Spanish Super Cup – and will be played out at the Santiago Bernabeu, the home of Real.
Last season Los Blancos won the Copa del Rey, while their city-rivals Atletico clinched La Liga. It was Los Rojiblancos’s first league title since 1996 and came much against the odds.
The two Madrid clubs also met in the Champions League final in May, with Real running out 4-1 winners after extra time to claim La Decima – their 10th European Cup triumph.
Madrid, who won the UEFA Super Cup in Cardiff earlier this month, will head into tonight’s contest as the favourites and will be aiming to win by a big margin to give themselves an easy time in the second leg at the Vicente Calderon on Friday.
Atletico have lost many of the players who were fundamental to their hugely successful season of 2013-14. Striker Diego Costa and defender Filipe Luis have both left for Chelsea, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has returned to the Premier League club after his three-year loan spell.
Former Valencia and Barcelona striker David Villa has also departed Atletico, but the Spanish champions have signed Antoine Griezmann, Mario Mandzukic, Jan Oblak and Raul Jimenez to maintain their push towards glory this campaign
Tonight’s game promises to be a very exciting one, and here is how the two teams will line up:
