It looks very much like Erik Lamela could be about to come into some form for Tottenham.
After enjoying a strong preseason under new manager and fellow Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, the former Roma star managed a so-so performance at Upton Park on Sunday, which was still a big improvement on last year's Premier League games, and a show-stealing substitute appearance against AEL Limassol in Thursday night's win over AEL Limassol.
With Spurs struggling to make inroads against the Cypriot side's resolute and determined defensive work, Pochettino turned to Tottenham's record buy on 71 minutes to impact proceedings. The Londoners were already a goal down, and it was looking increasingly likely that they would be taking a deficit back to White Hart Lane.
But as soon as Lamela set foot on the field, he looked capable of changing the game.
Within 10 minutes of his appearance, the Argentine had crafted goals for Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane with two super passes, and Lamela would go on to look a threat himself with some superb dribbling and late runs into attacking positions.
It was exactly what had been missing from the Spurs attacking effort earlier in the game.
Below we have a selection of comments from Twitter, many impressed with the 22-year-old's efforts:
First Soldado, now a HarryKane rolls through Cyprus. It's from 1-0 AEL to 1-1 in the 75th to 1-2 Spurs in the 80th. Lamela shining as sub.— uıǝɥuǝdןoʌ ʞɔıu (@nickvolp) August 21, 2014
I'll admit I had my doubts about Erik Lamela last season at Spurs, but he's done far better this season so far. #COYS— Chris Duncan (@punktufty1) August 21, 2014
Erik Lamela! Two assists from the Argentine, only Europa League but still great for confidence. I'm praying he comes good...— George Sessions (@GeorgeSessions) August 21, 2014
The Soldado and Lamela partnership is beginning to click and making Spurs tick. A win against QPR will set the scene for the duo to flourish— Ökari (@VanChosenJuan) August 21, 2014
