Manchester United continue to move closer to a reported deal for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria with the Daily Star claiming that the Argentine is free to discuss terms with the Old Trafford club.
United have been linked with a move for the £50 million rated wide man throughout the summer and the close of the transfer window on September 1 puts United under pressure to get a deal done and dusted before that point.
It will be difficult but the national daily newspaper suggests they have a real chance of pulling it off.
“United are reportedly on the brink of sealing the deal, with the Argentina free to discuss terms with Old Trafford chiefs,” reports the Star.
There are several potential stumbling blocks to any deal for Di Maria, which do contradict this segment of a piece from the Star’s website.
Firstly, a recent back injury to Cristiano Ronaldo could force Real Madrid manager Cristiano Ronaldo to shut up shop and hang onto the winger as he could need cover throughout the season over on the left hand side.
Secondly, there are still reports suggesting that PSG are interested in making a move for Di Maria, with the French side arguably a more attractive proposition for the Argentine should he leave Los Blancos.
PSG can be competitive in terms of any fee and personal terms plus they can boast Champions League football, which works against United.
Di Maria would be a top class addition at a club which is currently on the ropes after a poor start to the Premier League against Swansea last weekend.
Some of United’s rivals may already be writing LvG’s team off for this season, but the signing of Di Maria would be a real statement of intent and would definitely make them think twice.
