Manchester United transfer latest: Louis van Gaal to meet with Serie A club directors, claims report

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is scheduled to meet with Roma's Walter Sabatini.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has a potential face-to-face meeting regarding the signing of Mehdi Benatia, claims a report.

Roma directors Walter Sabatini and Mauro Baldissoni have flown to the UK to discuss a number of potential incoming and outgoing deals with a number of teams, and the United boss has a chance to make his pitch.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported earlier on Thursday: "Baldissoni and Sabatini are considering other routes for Benatia, and his replacements alternatives (Nastasic and Chiriches): had dinner with Franco Baldini (Tottenham), in the coming hours will also meet Wenger (Arsenal) and Van Gaal (Manchester United)."

Roma have an offer on the table from Bayern Munich of €28 million for Benatia, and they are keen to see if they can better it.

They want to clinch an up front offer of €32 million, plus another potential €8 million in add-ons.

So far Bayern have not bitten on their attempts to raise the price, and Roma are clearly keen to get a bidding war going.

Arsenal's potential interest is a threat to Manchester United, but it is unclear if they actually hold any plans for the player, or are just keen to hear Roma's proposal, although the Gunners are said to be in need of extra defensive cover.

United have a more pressing need for the Moroccan, who would become an automatic starter at the club.

It will just become an issue of how much they are prepared to pay for his services, and whether Bayern want him more.
