That is the view of three-time World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart, who was speaking to the Marca newspaper in Alonso's native Spain. The Scot was asked to name the best current F1 driver and eventually narrowed it down to Alonso.
“Mentally, probably Alonso," said Stewart. "The fastest is perhaps Lewis Hamilton.
“[Nico] Rosberg is definitely one of the best, more consistent, and on the same level I think is [Sebastian] Vettel. Those are the best.
“In the world there are hundreds of millions of drivers, several thousand make their living from it, a few hundred live very well," continued Stewart.
“There are 22 grand prix drivers, maybe six of them are really good, three exceptional, but there is only one genius. So if I had to choose the most complete driver I would say Alonso,” said Stewart, who was F1 champion in 1969, '71 and '73.
Stewart also dismissed the suggestion that, at 33, Alonso is past his best as a grand prix driver.
“I think it’s the perfect age,” he said. “He has lived the good, the bad and the ugly.”
“I don’t know if he should change teams, but what I do know is that he will have to make that decision in the next six to eight weeks,” added Stewart.
Alonso currently sits fourth in the World Championship having comprehensively out-performed his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen this term. The Spaniard currently sits 88 points and eight places above the Finn in the standings.
