Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes the club still need another striker if they want to mount a serious a title challenge this season.
Arsene Wenger signed £35 million Barcelona winger Alexis Sanchez this summer to help out on the goalscoring front, while bringing Costa Rican front man Joel Campbell back to the club after three consecutive campaigns spent out on loan.
The injured Theo Walcott is also on schedule to return to action sometime next month but, with polarising pair Olivier Giroud and Yaya Sanogo the only other options who fit the traditional mould up top, Parlour thinks more firepower is needed before the close of the transfer window.
‘It would be a great signing if they can get the right man up front, because it would just give them that little bit extra competition,’ he told Sky Sports News HQ.
‘Sanogo obviously played at the start of the season, and against Palace as well, but he’s got a knock at the moment, so certainly right down the spine of the team is where they should be looking at.
‘With Giroud, even against Besiktas you could see he’s not really match fit at the moment. There were a couple of opportunities he had and at times he didn’t really hold the ball up.
‘He’s just struggling a little bit and that’s why he’s not playing at the start of the season. Obviously Arsene Wenger’s working with this guy every day in training and saying, “I don’t think he’s fit enough”, so that’s why Sanogo’s got in front of him.
‘Obviously Joel Campbell’s back as well but whether he’ll get his chance, we’ll see. He did have a great World Cup for Costa Rica as a front man.
‘Certainly the Arsenal fans will be hoping in this last bit of the transfer window that they can go out and buy that centre-half they probably need, but good strikers are very hard to find these days.
‘Diego Costa obviously went to Chelsea, and they need that type of quality to really push themselves up to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.’
Despite Arsene Wenger’s comments last month that he would not be in the market for another striker, Arsenal have still been linked with various options over recent weeks, including Eduardo Vargas and Paris Saint-Germain pair Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi.
Such reports have been tenuous at times, but the fact remains that numerous pundits and fans alike believe the Gunners won’t be challenging for the Premier League title this season unless another goalscorer is brought in over the coming weeks.
