Manchester United legend Gary Pallister believes Luke Shaw will become a ‘world class player’ at Old Trafford and is eagerly anticipating the left-back’s return from injury.
Shaw earned a £27 million move to United this summer, after two impressive Premier League seasons at Southampton which saw him break into the England setup, but his start to life in Manchester has not gone well so far.
His fitness levels criticised by new manager Louis van Gaal during pre-season, the 19-year-old has now been ruled out for four weeks with a hamstring injury, but Pallister insists the teenager will wow fans upon his return.
‘He was on the radar of a lot of big clubs and he will become a world class player at United,’ he said, speaking as part of Chevrolet's ‘What do you #PlayFor?’ campaign.
‘That is the type of quality that we need, and there is money available, which might not always have been the case in recent seasons.’
Pallister was also encouraged to see youngsters Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard both feature in the Premier League opener against Swansea City, despite the 2-1 defeat, and thinks Van Gaal is doing the club a great service by giving its own academy products a chance in the first-team.
‘It was equally encouraging to see Van Gaal give debuts to a couple of Academy players on Saturday and he has already reduced the average age of the side,’ he added.
‘Even clubs like United need to nurture their own, and in United’s case it has always served them well because it is such a unique club that you need players who are soaked in the tradition of the club and know what is required to play for it.’
