On this day: Arsenal wanted Fellaini and Pardew slams Gunners

Alan Pardew

On the 20th August 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton and Newcastle United.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 20th August 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 20th August 2013…

No buy Cabaye

Alan Pardew slammed Arsene Wenger for his bid for Yohan Cabaye, which was submitted the previous day.

Arsenal made a bid believed to be in the region of £10 million for the Frenchman a year ago, a bid which was duly rejected by The Toon Army.

The bid came in just hours before Newcastle took on Manchester City in the first Monday Night Football of the Premier League season - which Pardew's men lost 4-0 after Cabaye was pulled from the starting XI:

And Pardew said of Arsenal's bid:

"You prepare for three days with a player of that talent and that was taken away from us. It had a huge bearing on the result as well. Why [Arsenal] couldn't do us the respect and the honour of waiting until Tuesday evening is beyond me. It is pretty obvious that I am upset about it."

Cabaye stayed with Newcastle until January, when he signed for PSG. Arsenal moved on by bringing back Mathieu Flamini to the club.

Arsenal want Fellaini

Arsenal were believed to be ready to rival Manchester United for Marouane Fellaini. The Everton midfielder was seemingly hoping for a move to a Champions League club last summer and with the interest in Yohan Cabaye proving fruitless Wenger was believed to be considering other avenues.

Fellaini joined United in the end, but is available now. However it is doubtful Arsenal would move for him after his recent injury and form woes.
