Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has been amazed by how quickly Calum Chambers has adapted to playing at centre-back for the club and has lauded the 19-year-old's maturity.
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has praised Calum Chambers for the way he has adapted to playing at centre-back since joining the club.
Signed from Southampton for £16 million this summer, Chambers has limited experience at the position during his short career, leading some to question Wenger’s declaration upon his arrival that he envisaged the right-back featuring in the heart of defence for the club.
However, the 19-year-old has produced three solid displays in that role to start the season, with the latest coming in Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw with Besiktas, and Szczesny has lauded his new teammate’s impressive versatility.
‘He's been fantastic for us and adapted very quickly to being a centre back,’ he told arsenal.com.
‘He only came in pre-season so he hasn't a lot of time to train with us in this position.
‘You can't tell that he's only 19 years old, he looks like a very experienced centre back. He's doing very well at the moment.’
With the injured Per Mertesacker returning to the starting lineup soon, Chambers’ run at centre-back seems set to come to an end in the near future but, with Wenger also declaring that the England under-19 international could become his long-term holding midfielder, there will still be numerous opportunities to gain first-team minutes over the course of this season.
