£40m-valued Arsenal target wants to 'follow in the footsteps of Ronaldinho' at Milan

Douglas Costa has stated a desire to join AC Milan this summer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

This morning comments emerged from Shakhtar Donetsk manager Mircea Lucescu suggesting that Brazilian star Douglas Costa could be on his way out of the club this summer. The Romanian stated of the player he rates higher than James Rodriguez:

"Everyone talks, everyone writes, but the truth is that so far there is nothing. However, I am sure that things will come out in the next few days, that the final transfers will be made. I speak in general and I repeat that, for me, all players are transferable. In the past I have allowed players like Fernandinho and Willian to go. Douglas Costa and Fernando are important players for me. If we keep them it will be a good thing, but I know that sooner or later they will leave."

Lucescu has previously intimated that Costa should stay one more term in Ukraine. However with the ongoing civil unrest in the country it looks increasingly as if he is ready to depart, along with several other Brazilian names.

Arsenal have therefore been linked with Costa. The club recently revealed his £40 million buy-out clause in an attempt to put off potential buyers but the truth is they would sell for much less - and Arsenal have been linked with a season-long loan deal for his signature.

But for those Arsenal fans desperate to see him play at The Emirates this season there is bad news, as Costa looks to have his heart set on another destination.

Italian strugglers AC Milan are looking for fresh blood this summer as they attempt to return to their former glories. And Costa has been speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport about his future this morning, insisting Milan is definitely an option - as he would like to follow in the footsteps of his idol, Ronaldinho:

"Easy. [My footballing idol] I grew up in Gremio so it is Ronaldinho. I met him. I was a close friend of his nephew, often attended his house...I'm ready for a big club. Who would not like to follow in the footsteps of Ronaldinho?"

The links to Arsenal have always been tenuous at best, but now it seems he has his heart set on Milan it would appear that this rumour can be put to bed. Douglas Costa looks unlikely to be joining Arsenal this summer.
