The Daily Mail claims Manchester United are currently talking to Ajax over a deal for versatile defensive star Daley Blind.
United’s need for further defensive reinforcements was demonstrated by the 2-1 defeat at home to Swansea City and the Dutchman is one of the players who has been constantly linked with Old Trafford since the World Cup.
“They are also talking to Ajax about Holland utility man Daley Blind,” writes Ian Ladyman.
Blind would be a superb addition for United mainly for his versatility.
He has the ability to provide cover at left-back, which is important considering the recent injury to Luke Shaw and he can also provide a presence in the defensive midfield role.
Reports rate him at around the £15 million mark and while he has stayed coy over a move away from Ajax, recent stories have placed him in Manchester looking for a house to move into.
Considering the stories suggesting an imminent move to Manchester United for Marcos Rojo, a straight up left-back, it’s reasonable to suggest that Louis van Gaal would be buying Blind as a holding midfield man.
That’s a role he used him well in during the World Cup with the Netherlands and it’s a role where United currently have a direct need for another player.
The problem United have with Blind is that the longer negotiations with Ajax take, the more dominant the position of the Dutch club becomes.
The close of the transfer window is now under two weeks away and a situation could develop where United lose their bargaining power over Blind and end up having no choice other than to pay the top end valuation Ajax place on their key player.
The defeat at Swansea has prompted the suggestion that van Gaal still needs several players for United to be competitive in the Premier League this season and Blind would be a safe investment to start with.
