The first round of Premier League action has now been completed after Chelsea’s impressive 3-1 win away at Burnley last night, which saw them get off to a great start in their pursuit of the title.
Eyes will now switch to another part of London, with Arsenal due to take on Besiktas in the first leg of their Champions League play-off game this evening. The rumour mill continues to spin round, linking some very good players with Premier League moves.
We’ve taken a look at the stories grabbing the attention on this day last year.
‘Arsenal make £10 million offer for Cabaye’
With Arsene Wenger under pressure from fans to make a high profile signing, the club made a £10 million move for Newcastle United’s Yohan Cabaye.
The Frenchman wasn’t the marquee signing that many Gunners were hoping for but Wenger stressed his experience and effectiveness in English football.
However, the move never happened with Wenger opting to sign Mesut Ozil and Cabaye ultimately moving to PSG in France.
‘Liverpool confident of beating Spurs to Willian'
Reports suggested that Liverpool were the club in the driving seat to beat Tottenham Hotspur to Brazilian wide man Willian.
The Reds and Spurs were both thought to be keen on a deal for the former Shakhtar star but it was another club who eventually signed him.
Chelsea tied Willian down on a long term deal after the player had spoken with Blues owner Roman Abramovich.
‘Chelsea haven’t ended Rooney pursuit’
The Independent reported that Chelsea hadn’t ended their pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
The Blues saw two offers for the forward knocked back last summer, but Jose Mourinho was thought to be keen on trying to finalise a deal.
Rooney stayed put and went onto sign a new contract under David Moyes worth £300,000 per week.
