Manchester United fans react on Twitter to Nani departure

Manchester United have loaned Nani to Sporting Lisbon.

Nani has rejoined Sporting Lisbon on loan for a year after six mixed seasons at Manchester United.

The Portuguese side confirmed the deal as part of a switch which will see the Red Devils sign Argentine international defender Marcos Rojo.

Portuguese website MaisFutebol report that United will be paying his wages in their entirety, and simply wanted him off their books and to save money on the Rojo deal to compensate.

Nani joined Manchester United in 2007 as the heir apparent to Cristiano Ronaldo, but failed to ever emulate his countryman.

His time at the club was not entirely disappointing, with his excellent 2010/11 season the highlight, in which he scored 10 goals in all competitions.

Capable of moments of magic, in the seasons since then they became more rare, when in theory he should have stepped up and kicked on further.

He featured as a second half substitute in United's opening game of the season against Swansea, but was particularly woeful, and manager Louis van Gaal was reported to have told him he had no future at the club following the 2-1 loss.

While his departure on loan has seen some glee from United supporters, others have wished him luck, in the hope he returns a better player.

Unlike United, Nani will have the opportunity to play Champions League football with Sporting this coming season - and could play well enough to see his price tag increase, netting the club a potential windfall next summer.
