Liverpool latest: Coutinho celebrates Brazil recall, ex-Chelsea striker linked again

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from Anfield...

Liverpool kicked off the new season with a 2-1 win over Southampton at Anfield. Goals from Raheem Sterling and Dnaiel Sturridge gave the Reds all three points despite Nathaniel Clyne's equaliser, with Liverpool's defence - for the most part - look more solid than last season. The addition of Dejan Lovren played a big part in that, but Reds legend John Aldridge says that goalkeeper Simon Mignolet showed a big improvement following a shaky first season on Merseyside last term.

"In many ways, it was a repeat of last season, with Simon Mignolet the hero on the opening day,” Aldridge said. "I saw Rickie Lambert say after the game that his save from Morgan Schneiderlin was one of the best he had ever seen, and I would have to agree with that."

"It took me two or three replays to realise he had actually got his fingertips to the shot and turned it onto the bar. He did well, Mignolet. It’s a big season for him, but this is a decent start. There was one flap in the first half, but he dealt with everything he needed to, and made two crucial saves late in the game."

Meanwhile, playmaker Philippe Coutinho has been handed a recall to the Brazil squad ahead of their game with Colombia in September. Left out of Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad for the World Cup, Coutinho has been reinstated by new manager Dunga, and the Liverpool star was delighted with the news.

"I'm very happy. What great news I received today," the former Inter star said. "I had high hopes. I was sitting here with my eyes on the computer and clinging to my phone. Some friends and family called me. I was hoping to be part of the list, yes. Thank God I got the chance and now I hope to do my best."

On the transfer front, Liverpool continue to be linked with moves for strikers after the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. A move for ex-Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o could be resurrected following initial talks last week, whilst Monaco's Radamel Falcao has also been suggested as the blockbuster signing need to replace the 31 goals scored by Suarez last season, with talks believed to be ongoing with the Ligue 1 side.
