Johnson or Manquillo - who misses out for Alberto Moreno?

Alberto Moreno Perez

Both right-backs played against Southampton, with Glen Johnson starting on the left. With Alberto Moreno available, the chances are one of Johnson or Javier Manquillo will miss out against Manchester City.

Liverpool completed the signing of Alberto Moreno from Sevilla for a fee believed to be around £12 million at the weekend as their summer-long pursuit of a left-back came to a successful conclusion.

Moreno wasn't signed in time to feature in Liverpool's win against Southampton but is likely to feature against Manchester City next Monday at the Etihad Stadium.

Glen Johnson - naturally a right-back - filled in on the left side on the opening day with Javier Manquillo filling in on the right side for the Reds. If Moreno starts against City, it means one of the two will be relegated to the substitutes bench, so who will be the unlucky individual?

There are many factors to consider, no less than the opponents they're facing next weekend. Manchester City are a side that are incredibly threatening going forward from all areas, so one would think the best defenders available would be the safe option - but we have seen how bold that Brendan Rodgers can be during his time as Liverpool boss.

Manquillo looked the more disciplined of the two defenders on the opening day, whilst everyone says that Glen Johnson's best asset to this Liverpool team is what he brings when going forward. We didn't see too much of Manquillo's attacking capabilities against Southampton but that in part may have been both the system Liverpool were adopting, along with how high the Saints were pushing up the field at Anfield.

There is also the factor of experiencing big games. Glen Johnson has played against the Premier League champions on several occasions, and whilst Manquillo may have played against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Atletico Madrid, experience still favours Johnson considerably.

Glen Johnson Liverpool DF 0 4 0.00 0 0.00 1 90

The statistics are interesting and indicates that Manquillo was the busier of the two against Southampton, having won nearly three times as many duels as Johnson, and winning more tackles. There is a telling statistic that neither Manquillo or Johnson were particularly effective going forward but as already said, it could be down to the tactics used by both sides.

If the reaction to both performances are anything to go by, Glen Johnson remains a player who attracts a lot of criticism from Liverpool fans - you could say that a lot of it is warranted. Experience may be the key if he gets the nod ahead of Manquillo next weekend, but if Rodgers was suitably impressed by Manquillo's debut, there is every chance he will give the young Spaniard a chance.
