Four areas Courtois outperformed Cech from Chelsea's first game last season

Thibaut Courtois was better than Petr Cech in four areas compared to Chelsea's first game last season.

Thibaut Courtois had a solid Premier League debut for Chelsea as Jose Mourinho revealed last night with his team selection against Burnley that the Belgian will be his number one this season.

It was a huge call by Mourinho because Petr Cech has been one of the club’s most consistent and long serving players over the last ten years and the boss could have been left with egg on his face had Courtois made a mistake.

However, he didn’t and he was better than Cech in four key areas compared to the Czech’s performance in the first game of last season against Hull City.

Courtois made more high claims than Czech did on the first day of last season, he was more accurate with his goal kicks, he made more accurate passes and he made more accurate long passes during the season opener for the Blues.

The high claims stat is an interesting one because one of the ways side could look to target Courtois is by being overly physical against him.

The consistency he was allowed to develop at Atletico Madrid appears to have given him the confidence to command his defence and take the pressure off of them whenever he can.

His passing stats were superb last night and that’s significant for Chelsea for a number of reasons.

Not only does it allow them to maintain pressure over the opposition when they are on top during games, his accuracy in terms if long balls will be crucial on the counter attack at some point during the season.

The trick for Courtois is maintaining these impressive stats throughout the rest of the season in the high pressure situations and at important times when silverware could be hanging in the balance.

For now, he’s completely justified the faith Mourinho has shown in him to start him ahead of Cech.
