Chelsea have been linked with a €44million move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho. But do they really need him?
It may seem a strange thing to ask given that the 22-year-old is regarded as one of the most promising defensive midfielders in Europe. And yet adding him to Chelsea’s squad could create more problems than it solves…at least in the short term.
In Nemanja Matic, Jose Mourinho has an outstanding player in that very position. And a look at Chelsea’s current first-team squad suggests they are perfectly placed for the challenges ahead.
Yes, William would be another great player in an already great squad. But he would be not so much the cherry on the cake, as the additional decoration on top of the cherry that could really be done without.
While there is a lot football to be played this season and in the campaigns to come, Chelsea have the squad to cope, with the likes of Marco van Ginkel and Jon Obi Mikel able to play in place of Matic when required.
Spending around €44million to sign William just does not make sense at this current time. Their squad is settled following a summer of impressive business and Mourinho would be wise to stop there and focus on the players already at his disposal.
