Steven Gerrard has backed Daniel Sturridge to ‘fly’ this season for Liverpool, after posting a picture of the striker celebrating on Instagram.
Sturridge opened his account for the new campaign by scoring the winner in the Red’s 2-1 win against Southampton on Sunday and his captain said he expects it to be the first of many this season for the jet-heeled striker.
Gerrard took to social media site Instagram to post a picture of the 24-year-old and used the caption: “This fella gonna fly this season congrats on the winner @dstudge”
There is added pressure on Sturridge to perform this season after the departure of Luis Suarez over the summer.
The talismanic Uruguayan left to join Barcelona in a mega-money deal and Liverpool are now reliant on Sturridge stepping up to fill the void left by the departure of their top scorer last season.
Suarez notched 31 times last year in the Premier League and Sturridge will have a task on his hands if he is to emulate that feat.
The former Chelsea man managed a very respectable total of 21 goals last season, but he was working in tandem with Suarez, whereas he started up-front on his own in Liverpool’s first game of the campaign on Sunday.
That didn’t stop him from looking dangerous, though, and his link-up with Raheem Sterling is sure to give Liverpool fans confidence that they can cope without Suarez.
Gerrard is clearly confident that the front-man can fill the void, too, and if Sturridge does improve on his tally from last season then he may just established himself as the most dangerous marksman in England.
