The Welshman notched his first goal of the new season, which turned out to be a decisive strike in a 2-1 win and Redknapp has suggested that Rambo’s fitness is what makes the difference.
“He is a phenomenal athlete, as his running stats below show. He covered more ground than any other player in the game and that energy and athleticism is why he is finding himself in the right place at the right time so often,” he wrote for the Daily Mail.
Ramsey is a classic box-to-box midfielder, which is one of the reasons he covers so much ground.
Defensively he works extremely hard and while he doesn’t have the defensive skill of a normal holding midfielder, he positions himself well which allows him to add to that side of Arsenal’s game.
Centrally, he’s good on the ball and has great vision, which makes him one of the safest players in the Arsenal team to move possession through at key times.
Again, his positional play means he gets into areas where he opens himself up for passes and that allows him to accumulate a high number of touches on the ball.
In terms of attack, his stats last season speak for themselves and he’s showing no signs of slowing down in terms of scoring goals.
Redknapp hits the nail on the head with regards to Ramsey’s fitness allowing him to burst into areas late, catching tired defenders on the back foot.
Arsene Wenger deserves a great deal of credit for the way he’s used and protected Ramsey, as well as for appointing a new fitness coach over the summer, Shad Forsythe.
Arsenal stand a great chance of being successful this season on more than one front and if they do add more silverware to the FA Cup of last season, Ramsey is likely to be at the heart of that success.
