Meulensteen says LvG needs four players in two weeks, but where?

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has suggested his old employers need four new players in the next two weeks.

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has given his thoughts on the current side following their opening day Premier League defeat to Swansea City.

It’s not good news.

Meulensteen has suggested that United boss Louis van Gaal needs to add at least four top quality players to his team if they are going to be competitive in the Premier League this season.

“We need to strengthen at the back, we need to strengthen in midfield and that is foremost the two areas they need to look at. I n my opinion, they need to bring in at least four top players to crank up the level,” he told the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show on talkSPORT.

United’s defence has been heavily criticised following the defeat and it’s an area where LvG still hasn’t replaced Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic who have both left the club.

With Mats Hummels and Thomas Vermaelen no longer realistic targets, it will be interesting to see whether LvG goes after another high profile target or chooses to work hard with the likes of Tyler Blackett who he’s introduced to the team.

There is plenty of creativity in United’s midfield but the side badly missed the presence of Michael Carrick against the Swans.

There is a real lack of authority and grit in the middle of the team at times when United are under pressure and that doesn’t seem to have yet changed following the David Moyes era.

Where the other two players coming in could slot into the squad is open for debate and if they are world class players as Muelensteen suggests, several current first team stars could see their positions quickly come under threat.

It’s still early doors but some late transfer business could give United a boost as they look to wrestle back the Premier League title.
