Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Sterling performance v Southampton

Raheem Sterling scored in an excellent performance for Liverpool today.

Liverpool got their post-Luis Suarez Premier League era campaign off to a winning start today, but it was not an easy win.

They defeated Southampton, of course a team they have pillaged this summer, 2-1 at Anfield but had to struggle for victory.

It was Daniel Sturridge who scored the winner, after Nathaniel Clyne had equalised for Southampton. However the first goal from Liverpool was really eye-catching. Jordan Henderson played a wonderful ball through the Saints defence and Raheem Sterling tucked away beyond newbie Fraser Forster.

Sterling was of course fantastic for the club, in a season in which he is set to be tasked with a leading role in the Liverpool XI.

He showed his class, pace and talent in abundance this afternoon at Anfield, much to the joy of Liverpool fans on Twitter.

Reports this week have suggested Liverpool are looking into a new contract for Sterling. The young talent has been linked with the ultimate move in world football, to Real Madrid, so a bumper new deal is said to be in the making as a deterrent (like that has stopped Real before).

Although Brendan Rodgers does not want him being paid to much, as he feels it would demotivate the prospect, this performance has probably bumped up his demand a little bit once again.

His future should for now remain at Liverpool. Under Rodgers he will play regularly and be one of the stars in this Premier League outfit.

Liverpool fans were very impressed with his performance, as they highlighted on Twitter after the game:
