Liverpool loanee player to watch this season, says La Liga expert

Guillen Balague has identified Liverpool's Iago Aspas's move to Sevilla as one of the best summer signings in La Liga.

Guillem Balague has identified Iago Aspas as a player to watch in La Liga this season.

Aspas left Liverpool after a terrible first-season in English football on loan at the start of the summer, joining Sevilla, but Balague believes that he can turn it around back in La Liga.

The attacker was well off the pace at Anfield and only made 14 appearances in the Premier League last season, but the Spanish football expert still thinks he has a lot of quality and can even prove to be a match to two of the big-name additions in La Liga.

He wrote, in a piece for Sky Sports identifying a selection of underrated Spanish transfers: “Iago Aspas failed at Liverpool. He did not adapt to the club, the city or the football.

“He now has a lot to prove with this one-year loan deal, with the possibility of a three-year option to follow.

“Perennial sellers of top talents, Sevilla have a good track record in spotting unfulfilled talent and, for Aspas, the only way at the moment is up.

“It could be a great deal if he accepts the challenge offered by Unai Emery – ‘do you want to be the player you were, do you accept the challenge to even get better?’. Let’s see…”

The former Celta man is already having to turn things around, after he failed to impress on his debut for the club in the Spanish media.

Aspas came on against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup, where Sevilla lost 2-0, and was given the lowest mark of any player on the pitch by Marca.

He will now be hoping to show that he has more about his game in the league campaign. Sevilla finished fifth in La Liga last year and will now be hoping to breach the gap to the top four, although the loss of Ivan Rakitic to Barcelona was a big blow to their ambition.

Balague clearly feels that they have bought well this summer, though, and also identified their deal for Gerard Deulofeu as one of the best bits of business by a Spanish side in the transfer window.
