Liverpool's season got off to a fine start, as the Reds saw off Southampton at home. Raheem Sterling opener was cancelled out by a Nathaniel Clyne equaliser, but Daniel Sturridge clinched all three point late on to hand Brendan Rodgers' side the win at Anfield. New signing Rickie Lambert - who arrived from the Saints this summer - was somewhat relieved to have got through the game with a win.
"I don't think we played badly, I just don't think it was as fluid as Liverpool can play," said Lambert. "It was a really hard game and it was a great three points. The first game is always nervous, you are never quite as sharp as you want to be. The first game everyone is excited and desperate to win and you are not sure how you are going to play and the quicker you can get that win the better."
Striker Lambert wasn't the only Southampton player to make the switch to Merseyside, as Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana also left St. Mary's Stadium for a move to Liverpool. Croatian international centre back Lovren was a long-term target for Rodgers, and the £20m star has even admitted that he had other offers on the table - but couldn't turn down a move to Anfield.
"I had better offers financially but from the first day I said I want to come to Liverpool. I want to achieve something here because I know this club is big and Brendan Rodgers is a great manager," said the former Lyon defender. "There is a lot of talent here - amazing players - and last season they showed they can do something. I'm really confident in this team."
On the transfer front, the Reds still want to bring a new striker after the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. Reports today suggest that Rodgers has lined up two targets - Monaco's Falcao and Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani. Colombian international Falcao is believed to be the top target, with Cavani the 'Plan B' if Juventus beat them to the signing of Falcao.
Heading the other way from Anfield to France is defender Tiago Ilori. The Portuguese centre back, 21, joined the club from Sporting Lisbon last summer, but didn't make an appearance before heading to Granada on loan for the second half of the season. Now, in order to get more experience, Ilori has signed for Bordeaux on loan for the entire season.
