Rickie Lambert hails Simon Mignolet save as 'one of the best I've seen'

Simon Mignolet's crucial save from Morgan Schneiderlin helped Liverpool get off to a winning start against Southampton at Anfield yesterday.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet pulled off a crucial save late on during the Reds' 2-1 opening day victory against Southampton.

Last season's runners-up knew they were in for a tough afternoon at Anfield as they faced one of only two visiting sides who left with all three points last season.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the Reds before Nathaniel Clyne levelled the scores shortly after the interval, and Daniel Sturridge scored ten minutes from time to restore the home side's advantage.

However, a shot from Morgan Schneiderlin which hit the underside of the cross bar was saved by Mignolet, which proved crucial as the Reds got off to a winning start.

Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert described it as one of the best saves he had ever seen, telling the Liverpool Echo: “It was a fingertip save. It looked like it was definitely a goal and he’s managed to push it onto the underside of the bar.

“It’s little moments like that that make all the difference.”

Mignolet was a little more understated when it came to his contribution late on in the game, telling the official Liverpool website: "I think first of all there was a foul on Skrts [Martin Skrtel] but the ball fell in front of Schneiderlin, who hit it really well but luckily I got a hand to it.

"But as always, the credit goes to the whole team. We fought and battled throughout the whole game, and ground a result out."

Some are already drawing parallels to Liverpool's opening day victory against Stoke City last season when Mignolet pulled off a double save first from the penalty spot, then on the rebound as the Reds started last season with a crucial victory, which gave them a platform to kick on and unexpectedly challenge for the Premier League title.
