Although many Manchester United fans are calling for the signature of a holding midfielder, AC Milan's Nigel de Jong seems to be moving further away from being a target.
After a poor start to the Louis van Gaal era, United are expected to do some serious business before the transfer window closes.
Over the last few weeks, Milan's Dutch international de Jong has been linked with the Old Trafford outfit on several occasions and his former national coach van Gaal is no stranger to his abilities.
The 29-year-old had an excellent World Cup campaign, which may have attracted several other clubs, so Milan seem determined to protect de Jong from the prying eyes of other teams.
De Jong's current deal expires in June 2015 but new Milan boss Pippo Inzaghi is said to see the pugnacious star as a crucial part of his midfield and has no intention of letting him leave.
If United do want to lure de Jong they may need to act fast but they may have a better chance due to the player's relationship with van Gaal.
