Those who have been keeping tabs on Eric Dier will have known Tottenham Hotspur had signed an absolute bargain this summer.
The England under-21 international impressed in the Primeira Liga for Sporting Lisbon and was widely tipped to move on this summer. But at just £4million the 20-year-old will prove to be one of the bargains not just of this season, but of the last decade.
The centre-back-cum-defensive-midfielder began to repay Spurs' minimal outlay on Saturday when he helped his side keep a clean-sheet at one end before netting the winner at the other, slotting home after receiving a through-ball from Harry Kane.
And overall he impressed in both areas of the field.
In defence his performance was solid rather than outstanding, but his composure was clear for all to see as he had a better passing-accuracy than any of his fellow defenders - 88.37%.
That was over 10% more than fellow centre-back Younes Kaboul, and was no doubt influenced by his ability to play in midfield when required.
Dier also won one tackle, five duels, two aerial duels and one interception.

He also proved to be effective in front of goal, scoring from his one and only attempt. And it will be interesting to see how this area of his game progresses in the years to come, as a goal-scoring and refined centre-back is a rare thing.

At just 20, Dier has already got the Tottenham faithful onside, and at this rate they may have just found a new hero for an amount that does not usualy buy you much in the transfer market these days.
