Goals from Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey were enough to see off Crystal Palace at The Emirates Stadium.
They failed to play to the standard they set in the Community Shield tie against Manchester City last weekend but were still too strong for their opponents Crystal Palace.
Palace came into the game off the back of a tumultuous week, in which Tony Pulis had left the club, but you could tell from early on that this Palace team still had all the hallmarks of a standard Pulis side.
And it was a classic Pulis goal that got them in the lead in the first-half. A corner from the right found the head of Brede Hangeland, who had wondered into Laurent Koscielny's zone with the Frenchman barely noticing.
Koscielny was lucky enough to get an opportunity to redeem himself. A free-kick from Alexis Sanchez was perfectly delivered into the area and Koscielny, eluding Hangeland, tucked away a clever header for 1-1.
But Arsenal had to wait a long time to get their winner, again it came in stoppage time of the half. This time it was Aaron Ramsey. A determined effort by Olivier Giroud saw the ball land at the feet of Mathieu Debuchy. His strike was saved by Julian Speroni but Ramsey had to simply tuck away a shit from a yard out for the glory.
It was not best of performances from Arsenal, but isn't that the clichéd hallmark of champions?
Here are some pictures from the game, as Arsenal got off to a decent start.
