Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has been speaking ahead of the Reds’ season-opener against Southampton.
The Brazilian is being tipped to have an outstanding season following a summer of relaxation while many of his fellow players took part in the World Cup in his homeland.
And now in an interview with Liverpool’s official website, Coutinho has talked about getting started again, the club’s ambitions and the new faces at the club.
“We share the same feeling with the supporters,” the player said of the excitement a new season brings.
“The squad are very motivated. We’ve been working really hard to be prepared for this season.”
So what of the club’s hopes for the new campaign? After all, they came so close to Premier League glory last season but now have to do it all again without their former talisman Luis Suarez and with a host of new arrivals needing to bed in.
“Our ambitions are similar to last year’s,” he added, “although with a greater focus on the trophy this year as we were very close to winning it last season.
“And certainly the fact that Liverpool have brought in new, high quality players will help us to produce another great season.”
Brendan Rodgers certainly has impressed with his summer spending, and in the likes of Lazar Markovic, Emre Can and Divock Origi he has three young players who can go on to become vital components in the Liverpool team of the future.
But for the former two, along with the likes of Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, the focus must be on the current campaign.
Liverpool were so close last year, but it will be a tough proposition to claim the title amid the renewed threat of a host of domestic rivals.
