La Liga champions Atletico Madrid are still in the hunt for more signings as they attempt to retain the Spanish title ahead of rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The latest name on the list is Benfica star Nicolas Gaitan, an attacking midfielder also linked with moves to Manchester United and Liverpool this summer.
Atletico and Lisbon-based outfit Benfica have already done business this summer as Diego Simeone’s men snapped up talented goalkeeper Jan Oblak in a bid to replace former Chelsea loanee Thibaut Courtois.
Two weeks after making the signing official, however, an incredible twist has occurred as according to Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira, his side have been offered Jan Oblak back as part of deal designed to lure away attacking midfielder Gaitan.
"It wasn't directly Atleti, but a representative who came directly with a clear offer. The operation included Oblak, money and the exit of one of our players", Vieira stated to the club’s TV station.
The Portuguese press have since named the mystery player as Gaitan.
26-year-old Gaitan has a release clause of €45million, and it appears that the Eagles are not willing to allow their player to leave unless a bid of such proportions is received.
