Not only did the 20-year-old put in a solid defensive shift during Spurs' 1-0 win at West Ham, it was he who scored his side's late winner at Upton Park.
Tottenham had Kyle Naughton sent off earlier, although the penalty he gave away was missed by Mark Noble. West Ham then had a sending off of their own and it was all to play for going into the closing stages of the game.
Up stepped Dier to settle the London derby for his side, seeming more suprised by the goal than anyone in his post-match interview.
“I’d be happy with a clean sheet, I wasn’t expecting to score," he told BBC Sport. “I’m not sure [what happened]. Andros [Townsend] went outside, I thought I’d make a run inside.
“I’d like to score more goals, to be honest. We knew this was a really hard to place to come and they play really direct football. Ten vs 11 was never going to be easy but we kept stuck in there.”
Understandably, Spurs fans were delighted with their debutant's performance. Of the club's five summer signings, 20-year-old Dier was the only man to take part against West Ham - and his supporters were out in full force after the game.
Several declared their outright love for the defender, while one fan compared the relatively small transfer fee paid for him to those paid for Luke Shaw by Manchester United and Dejan Lovren by Liverpool.
