Blow for Liverpool & Atletico? Reus named Dortmund captain for the day

Borussia Dortmund v FC Augsburg - Lewandowski, Reus

The 25-year-old is reportedly a transfer target for the Reds and the La Liga champions.

Borussia Dortmund have given their clearest sign yet that they intend to keep Marco Reus at the club this season.

Indeed, the Germany striker was named the side's captain for their first-round clash against Stuttgarter Kickers in the German cup.

Liverpool have reportedly registered interest in the 25-year-old, while reports claimed La Liga champions Atletico Madrid had agreed a deal for Reus.

However, Atletico chief Gil Marin denied the claims yesterday.

A report in Sport, via TVE, claims Marin said: "Reus has never been on the agenda of Atletico and his profile does not fit the current needs of the team."

Sport continued: "Atletico denies reports of Cope, which placed Atletico set to close to close the signing of Reus. Gil Marin, however, did acknowledge that Atletico will try to add a player."

That could leave the coast clear for Liverpool, who boss Brendan Rodgers yesterday admitted are searching for a new forward.

However, with Reus captaining his side for the day, Dortmund are sending a very clear message to any potential suitors: hands off.
