Football pundit Michael Owen has done his weekly Colossus Bets scoreline predictions for the Premier League’s top clubs ahead of this weekend’s opening round of fixtures.
Last season, the former Liverpool star caused quite a stir in North London as he predicted Arsenal to finish outside the top four while playing down the potential impact of record signing Mesut Ozil.
Although Owen was wrong about the Gunners’ finishing position, Ozil’s lack of form towards the end of the campaign was a cause for concern and his impact against the Premier League’s best matched that of Owen’s initial assessment.
This season, however, the former England international has backed Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for a better season, and believes that his team will kick off their campaign with a comfortable win over manager-less Crystal Palace.
“Arsenal won both of their matches against them 2-0 last season, and that is my main fancy here. But, given the improvements to their squad – I think Alexis Sanchez could be one of the stars of the season – I couldn’t rule out 3-0 and Any Other Home (AOH) either,” he wrote in his weekly Colossus Bets blog.
As for Liverpool, Owen predicts that his former club will be in a tough battle to accomplish a top-four spot due to the loss of the wonderful yet controversial Luis Suarez.
Despite the Uruguayan’s absence, the Reds have reinforced their squad well with a number of summer signings and Owen is backing them to avenge last season’s 1-0 loss to Southampton with a home victory.
“Rodgers has recruited well and has added more solidity to the defence, but their style of play won’t change. They made their home a fortress with their blitzkrieg style of play last season, and I don’t see Southampton repeating their 1-0 shock win there last season, where they were one of only three teams to come away from Anfield with points," he wrote. “I take Liverpool to win 2-1, with AOH.”
