Manchester United transfer news: Van Gaal coy on transfer targets; £30m defender tipped for Chelsea move

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has refused to discuss possible transfer targets with the press ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

United have been linked with a whole host of players in recent weeks, but in his press conference prior to the opening game against Swansea City, the Dutchman remained coy despite the numerous rumours.

“I could discuss this (specific targets) with you but I won’t do that. I will discuss it with Ed Woodward, not with you.”

So the rumours will continue for a little while yet, with a new defender very much on the agenda.

Mehdi Benatia – who is rated at £30million – has been strongly linked, but the Express claims Roma’s sporting director has flown to London to discuss a possible deal with Chelsea, rather than United.

Benatia would be an outstanding addition to United’s back-line, but it seems Chelsea could pip them to the talented Moroccan.

And finally, in a rumour that we did not pick up yesterday, Benfica are said to be interested in United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard.

The stopper is likely to leave Old Trafford this summer after failing to displace David de Gea, and the Daily Mail claims the Portuguese champions are one possible destination.
