The Red Devils enjoyed a superb pre-season campaign under Louis van Gaal, but they couldn't carry that into the season today as Garry Monk's Swansea left Old Trafford with all three points against an injury hit United side. Decimated by injuries to the likes of Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw, Rafael, Michael Carrick, Danny Welbeck and Robin van Persie left van Gaal with a patchwork line-up - shich the Swans took full advantage of.
Midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng gave Swansea the lead with a well placed left footed finish, but United captain Wayne Rooney brought his side level with a close range overhead kick in the second half. However, United's much questioned defence couldn't keep Swansea out, as Gylfi Sigurdsson opened his account for the season with a scrappy goal just 20 minutes from time.
United threw everything they could at Swansea in the final stages of the game, but despite a late penalty shout being turned down, the Red Devils couldn't find a goal and were left with yet another home defeat after last season's struggled at Old Trafford.
The result was a huge disappointment for United fans who had expected van Gaal to immediately turn the club's fortunes around, and the supporters voiced their opinions on Twitter after the game - with most demanding that the club now sign some players with the transfer deadline approaching.
If Van Gaal doesnt sign a good few high class players, this season is going to be no better than last. #MUFC— Jordan Rea (@JordanRea94) August 16, 2014
Only upside of #mufc's defeat is it might spur Woodward & Van Gaal to ship out the dead wood and sign some players. Swansea worthy winners.— Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) August 16, 2014
Van Gaal himself has marked 3 months as a time frame for team to adapt into his style of play. Sign key players then wait & watch. #MUFC— Africa Ukoh (@Pensage) August 16, 2014
Time for Van Gaal to get the checkbook out.... #MUFC— Clint Thrasher (@ClintThrasher) August 16, 2014
Yes that was woeful, but calm down it's only one game. Seriously need some signings though, at least van Gaal has admitted that. #MUFC— Stefan (@WhatStefanSays) August 16, 2014
Lost first game but Van Gaal is no David Moyes. Players to come back plus new signings which will surely happen LVG will get it right #mufc— Jaz Uppal (@Jaz_Uppal) August 16, 2014
