Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has been speaking to the club’s official programme ahead of the Premier League match against Crystal Palace.
The two sides will contest Saturday’s late kick-off, and in preparation for the match the Spaniard has been speaking about helping the Gunners’ young players improve.
In quotes also published on Arsenal’s official website, Arteta said, “We have some fantastic young players at the club and I feel a responsibility as captain to help them develop."
Aaron Ramsey and Kieran Gibbs both came in for specific praise, with Arteta claiming the Welshman was among the very best in his position.
"I've seen the strides forward that Aaron has made," Arteta said, "It has been unbelievable and I am very happy for him because he's developed into one of the best midfielders in Europe."
Ramsey certainly looked like that at his best last season, and he will be hoping his injury worries are behind him as he seeks to secure his reputation as one of Arsenal’s most important stars.
But it was another player who Arteta appeared to have the most interest in helping to develop – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“I see so much potential in him,” the midfielder said, “he’s been a bit unlucky with injuries but he’s like my little project.
“He needs to believe in what he’s got and I really think we will see a big season from him.”
There is no doubt the England international is a prodigious talent, and after injury robbed him of a chance to impact this summer’s World Cup, Arsenal fans will hope Arteta is right and they are about to see the dawning of another talent to rival the best in their history.
