Despite the rumours it’s time Nick Powell had Premier League chance

Following rumours that Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell is a target for Nottingham Forest, surely it is time he got a shot in the top flight.

Recent reports have claimed Nottingham Forest are interested in taking Manchester United’s attacking midfielder Nick Powell on loan.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a loan spell at Wigan Athletic last season, during which time he scored 12 goals in 41 games. And following that stint with the Latics, many United fans expected Powell to get his chance at Old Trafford.

However, having failed to feature in Louis van Gaal’s pre-season preparations, it remains to be seen where the former Crewe Alexandra player will be come September.

But wherever he is, surely it is time he is tested in the top flight.

He may still only be 20, but Powell showed last season that he can perform not just in the second-tier of English football but also in the Europa League, where he netted three times in six appearances.

He did come under some criticism in the second half of last season when his form dipped, but he was also the victim of an Achilles tendon injury that ruled him out for six matches.

And when you consider the headlines he was making as a teenager at Crewe, and the fact that he scored on his debut for United with a fine finish, it is surely time to see what he can do on a consistent basis in the Premier League.

While Forest would be a fine club at which to continue his footballing education, I would argue that it is time a top flight club took a chance on a player who could well be available on loan this year.

He could blossom at a club like Hull City or Southampton, under managers who could surely help him become an effective Premier League player.

It may well be too soon for Powell to stake a claim for a regular starting-spot at United. But another spell in the second-tier would be a waste of time and talent.

It is now time for the player to take the next step up; to prove he is deserving of the superlatives that he generated even before he completed his move to Old Trafford.
