‘Arsenal favourites on paper but football is won on the pitch,’ says Besiktas boss

With another European adventure about to start for Arsenal, their next opponents' boss has had his say.

As Arsenal prepare for their Champions League qualifying match against Besiktas, the Turkish side’s manager, Slaven Bilic, has been speaking about the tie.

The first leg takes place on Tuesday with the return leg on Wednesday August 27 at the Emirates Stadium. And while Bilic accepts Arsenal are favourites on paper, he has not ruled out an upset.

In quotes published by Turkishfootball.com, the former Croatia manager said, “Arsenal are favourites on paper but football is won on the pitch.

“All my players are solely focused on the Arsenal game.

“Arsenal have some of the best players in the world, but we have seen on many occasions that talent doesn’t necessarily mean a team will win.”

Big things are expected from the Gunners this season after they made some impressive additions to their squad.

In Alexis Sanchez, Arsene Wenger has a bona fide superstar who could fire the Gunners to glory once more. While Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy are fantastic additions to an already-fine back-line.

But Bilic is right; shocks happen regularly in football and Besiktas will be out to cause another.

But that said, Wenger will be doing all he can to ensure that does not happen and his exciting team makes it into the group stages of a competition he will secretly be hoping they can win.
