The ex-Spurs man has tipped Chelsea to win the Premier League title - but thinks Arsenal will run them 'very close.'
His prediction implies that the Gunners will enjoy a strong season and potentially finish above the other members of the 'big five.'
I think that Arsenal could run Chelsea very close. There, I've said it.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) August 15, 2014
Lineker's prediction comes at an interesting juncture for Arsenal, of course, with Arsene Wenger's side just having ended their nine-year trophy drought and spending large sums on new signings for the past two summers.
Last season, the Gunners spent big on Mesut Ozil; this term, they have invested £35 million in Alexis Sanchez.
Doubts still remain about their ability to last the distance, however. Arsenal were top of the Premier League for longer than any other team last campaign - but still ended up finishing fourth, something that seems to have become a trademark for Wenger in recent years.
Historically, the north London side have faded come the business end of the season. According to Lineker, though, that is about to change.
Other pundits have expressed their doubts, suggesting that the signing of Sanchez does not fix Arsenal's existing problems, while there seems to be a view that a defensive midfielder is also needed - along with another centre-back.
The Gunners' season will no doubt make for intriguing viewing, though, for if they truly want to challenge for the Premier League title again, this term could be one of their best chances yet.
