Pochettino: Townsend must "recover" for Spurs – could loan help?

The Tottenham boss has dismissed any suggestion Andros Townsend will be leaving but the Argentine has admitted he needs game time – could a loan beckon?

Mauricio Pochettino believes that Andros Townsend has the potential to be a very important player for Tottenham this season, but only if he is able to recover from his recent injury and get back some much-needed match sharpness.

The Argentine spoke about the future of the England international this week, stressing that he was keen to keep the 23-year-old at the club, but admitting that he was far from being ready for the new campaign.

Townsend enjoyed something of a breakthrough season for Spurs in the Premier League last term, featuring 25 times in the top-flight for the Lilywhites before injury prematurely ended his campaign early and meant he missed out on appearing for England at the World Cup in Brazil.

But despite a largely positive 12 months at White Hart Lane, there are some who still believe the midfielder could benefit from another loan spell away from the club and the opportunity to play regularly in the Premier League and develop further as a player.

Townsend previously thrived on loan at Queens Park Rangers during the 2012-13 season, featuring 12 times for the Rs and scoring twice.

Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has been linked with another loan move for the winger and while a permanent deal looks unlikely, Pochettino’s admission that Townsend still needed time to get back to his best could open the door for a Loftus Road return.

"I think he’s an important player," the Spurs boss said.

"He’s an English player for the national team, he missed the World Cup because of injury but we need to recover a player like him because he has great potential and very good quality."

A short loan move to QPR, which could run up to January, would allow Townsend to recover and fulfil some of the potential he previously showed at the London club.

He could then return to Tottenham in January, fresh and ready to help Spurs mount a credible challenge on the top four.

If Pochettino is keen on keeping Townsend in the long-term, helping him recover and rediscover his form, then a loan away could be the solution.
