Manchester United latest: Swansea preview and Rojo update

News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

Manchester United take on Swansea at Old Trafford on Saturday at 12.45pm local time for the opening game of the new Premier League 2014/15 season.

The match will also be new manager Louis van Gaal’s first competitive match in charge and Wayne Rooney’s first competitive match since being made Red Devils captain.

In team news, it was confirmed on Thursday that new signing Luke Shaw will be out for a month with a hamstring injury, leaving the boss with a headache at left-back.

Robin van Persie is one of the stars expected to miss Saturday’s clash with the Swans.

Antonio Valencia, Jonny Evans, Michael Carrick, and Danny Welbeck are all unlikely to be available.

Meanwhile, United legend Paul Scholes believes United’s ‘transfer failings’ hinder Louis van Gaal as the season commences with only two senior players added to the ranks since David Moyes’ reign.

“I’m sure he would have liked to have signed more players,” said Scholes. “He’s not managed to do that yet. Are the players out there available?”

“I know he likes Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett. But are they ready to come into a team and win the league yet? I’m not so sure.”

Paul Scholes also described Louis van Gaal as a “mad genius” but he doesn’t believe the Red Devils will win the Premier League title this season under the Dutchman.

In transfer news, Ajax boss Frank de Boer has admitted he will not stop the transfer of Daley Blind going through, provided United meet the club’s valuation of the Dutch defender, thought to be around £15 million.

Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal is reportedly ‘angered’ by the situation regarding Marcos Rojo’s transfer status, following a dispute between Sporting Lisbon and his management company.

The Mirror reports United will turn their attention to Fredy Guarin after failing in their pursuit of Arturo Vidal.

The Metro has continued to link United with a move for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.
