Engadget has reported on a new camera that can capture 4.4 trillion frames per second. Yes, you read that right, trillion. Developed by researchers in Japan, the camera use a technique called Sequentially Timed All-optical Mapping Photography, or ‘STAMP’ for short.
In just one shot it can take images 1,000 times faster than the regular pump-probe method high-speed cameras currently use. This method uses ‘repetitive measurements’ in order to build up an image by ‘pumping’ light at the subject being photographed, with it then being ‘probed’ for absorption.
The creation of this STAMP technique means that scientists can use such a camera to better study different scientific reactions, and they’ve already used the camera to study plasma dynamics and lattice vibrational waves – which were difficult to observe with previous technology.
The report from the researchers describes the method used below:
‘The principle of this method—‘motion picture femtophotography’—is all-optical mapping of the target's time-varying spatial profile onto a burst stream of sequentially timed photographs with spatial and temporal dispersion.’
