Eredivisie champions Ajax have emerged as shock contenders to sign former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o, who had been linked with Tottenham and Everton.
Samuel Eto’o could be set to wave goodbye to the Premier League after the former Inter Milan and Barcelona forward’s agent admitted that the striker was “considering” a move to Ajax in Holland.
It had been widely thought that the 33-year-old was keen in remaining in the Premier League this season, after enjoying a solid campaign with Chelsea where he scored 12 goals in 34 games last term.
A whole host of top-flight sides had been linked with a move for the veteran forward, who is available on a free transfer following his release from the Stamford Bridge club.
Tottenham initially emerged as contenders to recruit the Cameroon international early in the summer, but despite the Lilywhites failing to recruit a new forward ahead of the start of the season, that interest looks to have cooled slightly.
West Ham United were also thought to have been keen, only for Eto’o to reportedly reject a move to Upton Park after the club failed to meet his wage demands, with Sam Allardyce instead moving to bring in Diafra Sakho from Metz.
Liverpool were also reported to have contacted the forward over a move, though those talks are thought to have stalled, giving Merseyside rivals Everton a chance of recruiting the forward, who is also believed to be on Roberto Martinez’s radar.
However the likelihood of Eto’o remaining in England appears to have decreased, with no agreement forthcoming and Ajax now battling to land the two-time Champions League winner.
The striker’s agent told De Telegraaf this week that the Cameroonian was “considering” a move to the Dutch club, which would allow him to compete in the Champions League and perhaps even add a record-breaking Eredivisie title to his list of personal honours.
Last season's title victory saw Ajax equal PSV Eindhoven's record four consecutive Eredivisie championship wins.
