Jamie Redknapp believes that Aaron Ramsey can be Arsenal’s answer to Frank Lampard.
Ramsey’s emergence as a Premier League star over the past year has been a major positive for Arsenal fans and many are excited to see how he continues to develop this season.
Last year the Welshman scooped the club’s Player of the Season award and was a vital part of their season, as they claimed a Champions League spot.
And Redknapp has tipped the 23-year-old to push on again in the upcoming campaign – even backing him to be able to emulate Chelsea legend, and his cousin, Lampard.
“Aaron Ramsey, in particular, is a player I’m excited to see," he wrote for Sky Sports "He is going from strength to strength and can be Arsenal’s Frank Lampard, scoring 15-20 goals a year, as long as he keeps himself fit.
“He’s got over those insecurities he had when Arsenal fans were criticising him when he gave ball away and now he knows he’s Arsenal’s main man – and that’s so important for any player.”
Ramsey had threatened to be another British star to fail to live up to his early promise, but his blossoming as a player last year was a joy to watch.
Early on in his Arsenal career, after a broken leg had hampered his progress, he was often anonymous in games, but he was transformed during the previous campaign.
Driving forward from midfield, he became the star-turn in an Arsenal side packed with talent and notched 10 times in 23 appearances for the Gunners.
He has started this campaign well too, scoring in his side’s 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield.
It means that he has an excellent platform to build upon this year as the competitive football starts and Arsene Wenger’s side aim to mount a Premier League title challenge.
The Gunners go into the season more confident than in a long-time after the arrivals of Alexis Sanchez and Calum Chambers have continued to build upon the momentum gained by the FA Cup win towards the back of last season.
There is a genuine excitement around the Emirates which has not been felt in some time and if they are to be successful then Ramsey’s form will be pivotal.
Arsenal start their season tomorrow with a match against Crystal Palace and it will be a good chance for Wenger’s men to make a statement for the new season – with Ramsey hoping to open his Premier League account for the current campaign.
