According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli have finally made official contact with Manchester United regarding a possible move for Marouane Fellaini.
Rumours over the last week or so have suggested the Italian club want to take the Belgian either on loan or in a permanent move. And while Louis van Gaal has gone on record to speak of the importance of the former Everton man, the belief of many is that Fellaini will not be at Old Trafford when the transfer window closes.
The midfielder made a goal-scoring return to United in their pre-season friendly against Valencia earlier this week. But Di Marzio claims Napoli have now made official contact and United will make a decision in the next 48 hours.
A loan move would make little sense for Fellaini at this stage of his career, especially if he wants to impress his new manager at close quarters.
After all, some would argue that the player was not used correctly by David Moyes and that van Gaal will use him more as a Plan B – an additional aerial threat that can unlock stubborn defences – as was the case against the Spaniards.
That said, it seems Napoli have not given up hope just yet, and it will be interesting to see what happens regarding the player who may feel he has not yet had a fair crack of the whip at United following a prolonged spell on the side-lines last season.
