Arsenal's Mesut Ozil reveals two key areas he needs to improve

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has been discussing where he needs to improve this coming season.

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil is looking forward to the season ahead, and hopes he can be fit enough to play a role against Crystal Palace on opening day.

The German international took plenty of criticism last season, much of it unfairly, but knows if he is to win over his doubters, then there are improvements to be made.

In an interview with German magazine SportBILD, he picked out two areas where he can directly kick on.

He said: "There is room for improvement in all departments. I need to have more shots at goal again, and also improve my headers. The World Cup title was a great success, but it has to go on now."

A look at statistics last season show that, in each of the two areas, Ozil was far from prolific.

A simple way for Ozil to win over his doubters is by scoring goals and being decisive in games, so taking shots is a potential easy win for him.

Only managing to slightly average over one per game in his debut season is not enough, although is entirely consistent with his performances at Real Madrid.

Ozil is by nature, unselfish, his main asset being in providing goals for teammates, but it is well worth him taking a more direct route when there is a chance, and having the confidence to do so.

The German, by his slight frame, will not be expected to win many aerial duels, but even so - five in 26 games is a particularly low return. Nobody is expecting him to be Yaya Toure, but if he can improve on his initial return then he will take a further step towards being the all-rounder he aspires to be.
