Most of the transfer focus so far his summer has been on bringing players in to the club, but there was one departure today as defender Martin Kelly has completed a £1.5m move to Crystal Palace. The 24-year-old, who can play at right back or centre back, joins the Eagles on a three-year deal.
"It was difficult but it’s not a surprise because the whole of last season I was fit and I wasn’t playing; that’s why I had to make the decision and come to a club like Palace," said Kelly.
Kelly may not be the only defender on his way out of Anfield, as youngster Tiago Ilori could be set for another loan move. The Portuguese centre back, 21, arrived from Sporting Lisbon last summer but failed to make an appearance for the Reds before being sent out to Granada on loan in January. Now with Dejan Lovren snapped up and Kolo Toure intending to stay at the club, Ilori is being lined up for a loan move to French side Bordeaux, according to reports today.
Liverpool continue to be linked with replacements for star striker Luis Suarez, who left Merseyside for Barcelona in a £75m deal earlier this summer. Despite manager Brendan Rodgers' pursuit of more forwards, former Reds hero Dietmar Hamann says Liverpool will be better off without the Uruguayan.
"I have always been very critical of Suarez’s antics. In footballing terms, he is a big loss, but somebody else will score the goals and I think, long-term, they will be better off without him than with him," said Hamann. "I’d rather have the six or seven players they have now than Suarez, because at the end of the day, if you want to win things, you need people you can trust, and he can’t be trusted."
Despite Hamann's comments, attacking players continue to be linked with Liverpool every day. Today, some rather questionable rumours had linked former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi with a move back to England, but the agent of the Fiorentina star poured cold water on the speculation.
"There is nothing between Rossi and Liverpool," said Andrea Pastorello. "There is absolutely nothing to comment on. Honestly, I don't know anything about this. I'm not aware of any offer. This is something that has come from England and nowhere else."
Another player to be linked with the club is Schalke's Dutch forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, and the prolific striker has remained coy over his future - which could put him back on Liverpool's radar.
"I have not had any conversation," the former Ajax star said. "I'll wait to know what Schalke wants to do. "
