Former Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg has backed Mesut Ozil to have an ‘amazing’ season at the Emirates, following his up-and-down debut campaign.
Having signed from Real Madrid last September for a reported £42.5 million, Ozil got off to an impressive start with the Gunners but faded as the season progressed, finishing the campaign with seven goals in 40 appearances, while earning mixed reviews for his performances.
However, after proving an important part of the German World Cup-winning side this summer, Ljungberg believes the 62-times capped midfielder will be more accustomed to the rigours of English football in 2014-15, tipping him to star in Arsene Wenger’s lineup.
‘I have seen that with a lot of players, where they start well and then they get a little bit tired because in England you get tackles which would earn you free kicks in most other leagues, and that can be hard for technical players.
‘Maybe that’s what hit Ozil a little bit at one stage, but now he is used to it and accepts that English football is not the same as what you get in Spain.
‘I think he is going to be amazing this season, but often it takes a season for any player to adapt to the Premier League.’
